Synopsis:
The works of Juan Rulfo, a precursor of Latin American magical realism, adapted for the screen. The three novellas are connected by the character of Don Julio. The old man lives alone in a hacienda which is being absorbed by the huge Mexico City. Don Julio escapes from the surrounding reality into the world of memories. Images from the past are so strong that they reawaken his old love for aunt Cecilia and young Clotilde. The film was inspired by the writings of Juan Rulfo, a novelist, short story writer, and photographer. Director’s statement: “'Purgatorio' is a collection of stories about the ghosts of people who lived and died. They tell us their stories at the moment of death; on that threshold when the door opens into a different dimension where one is neither alive nor dead, but suspended in the space created by Rulfo’s literature. The solitude, isolation, sadness, passion, love, qualms of conscience, and violence which are a part of the characters’ lives almost overflow from the screen. The one thing that is the most human is the certainty of death”.

Roberto Rochín

Born in Mexico in 1954. A film director and producer, he studied film at Loyola University in Southern California. His debut film, 'Ulama, el juego de la vida y la muerte' (1986), received five Ariels and international recognition. He filmed the docudrama 'El misterio de los mayas' (1995) in IMAX, introduced the Motion Control visual effects system in Mexico. He made screenplay adaptations of the novels 'Asesino solitario' and 'El amante de Janis Joplin' by writer Elmer Mendoza.
