Sections, Competitions, Awards

The programme of the WFF is divided into five competitive and five non-competitive sections. Everyone entering a film can indicate which section or sections they wish to submit the project for.

Competitive Sections:

1. International Competition
for feature films from all over the world

2. Competition 1-2
for first and second feature films by directors from all over the world

3. Free Spirit Competition
for independent, innovatory, rebellious films from all over the world

4. Documentary Films Competition
for feature-length (over 60 min.) documentaries from all over the world

5. Short Films Competition
for short films (less than 30 min.) from all over the world

 

Awards:

1. International Competition awards:

a/ the main award - Warsaw Grand Prix
the financial part of the award: 25,000 euro*). 50% of the prize money goes to the Director (or Directors) and 50% to the Producer (Producers).

b/ Best Director
The financial part of the award: 5.000 euro*). The award goes to the Director (Directors).

c/ Special Jury Award
The financial part of the award: 2.000 euro*). The award can be given to an actor, composer, editor, director of photography, producer, scriptwriter or set designer.

2. Competition 1-2 awards:
Winner of Competition 1-2: The Jury can give one, two or three equally important awards. The financial part of each award: 5.000 euro*). The award goes to the Director (Directors).

3. Free Spirit Competition award:
Free Spirit Award: The financial part of the award: 3.000 euro*). The award goes to the Director (Directors). There can be only one winner of the Free Spirit Competition (no ex-aequo).

4. Documentary Competition award
Best Documentary Award: the financial part of the award: 3,000 euro*). The award goes to the Director(s). There can be only one winner of the Documentary Competition (no ex-aequo).

5. Short Films Competition
Best Short Film Award: the financial part of the award: 1,000 euro*). The award goes to the Director(s) of the winning film. There can be only one winner of the Shorts Competition (no ex-aequo).

*) all financial awards are subject to tax, to be paid in Poland, according to the Polish Law

 

Non-Competitive Sections:

1. Gala Screenings
new films of well-acclaimed directors from all over the world

2. Discoveries
visions of the contemporary world

3. Discoveries - The World Today
features (fiction and documentaries) dealing with contemporary issues

4. Family Cinema Weekend
films for children and their parents

 

Audience Award and the Audience Poll
All the films presented at the WFF take part in the Audience Poll for the best film of the Festival. The film which gets the highest marks from the audience wins. The audience vote after each screening. The winner receives the Audience Award (no cash involved).

The FIPRESCI Award
For the best first or second film by a director from Eastern Europe, presented in any festival section. FIPRESCI is the International Federation of Film Critics (www.fipresci.org).

Ecumenical Jury Award
The Jury members are nominated by SIGNIS (World Catholic Association for Communication) and INTERFILM (International Interchurch Film Organisation). Apart from the artistic quality the Ecumenical Jury will take into account the spiritual and human dimensions of films.

NETPAC Award
NETPAC is a Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (www.netpacasia.org). It will give the award for the best Asian film presented at the WFF.
