A film about love and loss, set in the crowded back alleys of Dhaka, Bangladesh. A teenage transsexual leaves his village as a boy and enters the effervescent city life as Salma, a girl in search of identity, love and above all, a sense of acceptance. Emotionally torn between her past and present life, Salma is faced with challenging experiences that will force her as well as the audience to question any preconceived notions of gender, sexuality, family, and love.
This is a film about hijras, referred to as the third gender in South Asian cultures. They are born either male or hermaphrodites, but have the desire to live, dress, and act as women. In the caste system, they occupy the lowest place in the social hierarchy, lower than the caste of latrine cleaners - the "untouchables".
